Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC): The individual first-aid-cell.

Cell therapies are the forefront of modern, individualized medicine. Cell-based drugs are promising remedies for numerous diseases with complex pathogenesis mechanisms, like Graft-versus-Host-Disease, Sepsis and the disorders arising from a disturbed feto-neonatal period. Especially MSC have proven their efficacy in ameliorating numerous devastating diseases in models of adult, pediatric and neonatal diseases. However, successful translation into clinical routine requires large clinical trials, which themself require large quantities of a standardized cell product of highest quality.

In close collaboration with the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD), our lab has developed a method to isolate vast amounts of clinical-grade MSC from the umbilical cord tissue. The Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy) generously supports these efforts with a grant of one million Euro to enable the large-scale production of MSC for clinical trials and, eventually, the clinical routine.

Watch Prof. Dr. med. Mario Rüdiger explaining the science behind MSC in the video below (German).

8th European Symposium on Delivery Room Management 2016:

Workshop announcement (EcoCare-PIn):

"Birth cohort study EcoCare-PIn: First results and future plans".

Employing a linkage of health insurance data of a large birth cohort of children (N=139,383) with primary patient-reported data of a

cohort subgroup (N~4,500), the BMBF-funded study EcoCare-PIn  follows a methodologically advanced approach in order to analyze:

1) the effects of preterm birth on a broad range of individual,  family and health care system outcomes as well as

2) the modifying effects of interdisciplinary treatment concepts.

In this workshop we will present first results of EcoCare-PIn and discuss their relevance with regard to current healthcare  provision for preterm born children. Participants are cordially invited to contribute to the identification of further important analyses to be conducted and therefore to an optimum utilization of the excellent data source of EcoCare PIn.

Workshop announcement:

''Improve your resuscitation skills using monitoring'' (Colin Morley)

“Learn from the expert”:

minimize CPAP mask leak and practice face mask ventilation skills  with different masks and devices ensuring that they are leak free. Learn how to interpret flow and tidal volume waves and adjust each  inflation to deliver an appropriate tidal volume. Other topics such as:

- heart rate monitoring,

- SpO2,

- FiO2,

- expired CO2

- video recording of resuscitation.

will be discussed.

Industrial Workshop announcement (MONIVENT):

Monivent® Neo is a non-invasive monitoring device, currently under development.  It is an add-on to existing manual ventilation equipment, helping the caregiver  ensure an effective and gentle treatment during manual ventilation of newborns unable to breathe spontaneously. The airflow given to the baby during the treatment is measured directly in the face mask through the integrated sensor module and  the data is wirelessly transferred to the external monitoring unit. ProductFeedback on several critical parameters, such as tidal volume, for evaluation of the treatment are continuosly shown on the external display to guide the caregiver  throughout the procedure. This allows the caregiver to make the necessary adjustments  to achieve a safe and gentle treatment. The data is stored of analysis and quality assurance purposes.
